We understand how families can be some of the most significant relationships of our lives and when issues go unresolved they can shake the entire unit.
Family Therapy FAQ
What are the benefits of family therapy?
Ideally, all family members will benefit from family therapy whether or not anyone feels like they are showing up to therapy for someone else. Because we are believers of family systems, we believe that all parties should be involved in the process whenever possible because everyone has their own unique role that they play within a family system.
What are the goals of family therapy?
During family therapy there may be individual goals that are identified yet, we do our best to identify and develop shared goals that all members of the family agree to. If you recognize that there are some unresolved issues, past trauma, past hurts that someone would want to process or current issues, events or concerns that someone wants the support of their family to help them navigate.
What if someone cannot attend?
Your individual Psychotherapist will provide you guidance based on your specific family and circumstances, however, typically whenever possible we encourage all identified members of the family to participate in family therapy whether or not they believe they have anything to offer or were or are involved.
What can we expect?
In family therapy there are typically two or more individuals and because of that we utilize traditional talk therapy most often and from time to time will also incorporate experiential techniques and exercises. This might include playing games, asking one another questions, writing/journaling, creating art, listening to music, etc. to best facilitate understanding and healing.
